The artist uses the malong as the main focus of her performance piece. The malong is a traditional piece of cloth used by several tribes in the Southern Philippines. It may be used as a tube skirt for both men and women and also a turban, dress, blanket, and more.
The malong was gifted to the artist as a pasalubong (souvenir). With some gifts, receivers feel obligated to them and must find a use for them. The artist uses the malong to transform her body through several poses to illustrate her internal struggles. Throughout the duration of the performance, the artist will choose ambiguous positions from daily life that represent several themes such as sexuality, religion, depression, and fear. |
